Arkþing and C.F. Møller chosen to design Landsbankinn building
Landsbankinn has decided to partner with Arkþing ehf. and C.F. Møller on the design and development of new facilities for the Bank at Austurhöfn in Reykjavík.
Seven architect teams were in October 2017 selected to submit initial proposals for the building and in January 2018, the Bank received proposals from six of the teams under anonymity. A three-person advisory council assisted the Board of Directors and CEO in the decision process and recommended the selected proposal. Once an agreement has been negotiated with the team behind the winning proposal, work on the final design will commence. The initial proposal may undergo some changes during this process yet the overall look of the building should remain as is. The aim is to begin construction in early 2019. Construction will be tendered out.
Helga Björk Eiríksdóttir, Chairman of the Board of Directors:
"The building designed by Arkþing and C.F. Møller is beautiful and harmonises with the environment. We consider that it will fit the cityscape splendidly and be a valuable asset to Landsbankinn. The proposal is well suited to the Bank's operation and is in line with the conditions set out earlier in the process. We look forward to collaborating with the team from Arkþing and C.F. Møller on the building's final design. We also thank other architect teams for their interesting and professional proposals."
Lilja Björk Einarsdóttir, CEO of Landsbankinn:
"We are relocating the Bank's operation to much smaller, more efficient and fitting premises. One of the main virtues of the proposal is that work spaces are ideal and internally linked, which promotes a modern work environment that focuses on project-based work facilities. The building is a well-designed office and commercial space and those parts of the building intended for rent or sale have been successfully solved. It is important that the organisation of the building is flexible and allows for moulding of the facilities to changes in the Bank's operation. This is an investment in the future."

Housing for Landsbankinn
Landsbankinn currently operates out of 13 buildings in central Reykjavík, mostly rental housing. This current housing situation is uneconomic and inefficient for the Bank’s operation. In spring 2017, the Board of Directors of Landsbankinn decided to construct housing for the Bank's operation at Austurbakki 2 at Austurhöfn, Reykjavík. The Bank will occupy around 10.000 m2 of the new building, or some 60% of its square measure, and sell or rent around 6.500 m2 as premises for commerce and services. Relocation of the Bank's operation to new housing will reduce occupied square metres from 21.000 m2 to around 10.000 m2.
The architect teams that submitted initial proposals for the building were:
- Arkþing and C.F. Møller
- BIG and Arkiteó in collaboration with BIG Engineering, VSÓ ráðgjöf, Dagný Land Design and Andri Snær Magnason
- Henning Larsen and Batteríið arkitektar
- Kanon arkitektar ehf. and Teiknistofan Tröð ehf.
- PKdM arkitektar
- Teymið - A2F arkitektar, Gríma arkitektar, Kreatíva teiknistofa, Landmótun and Trivium
The advisory council was comprised of G. Oddur Víðisson, architect, Halldóra Vífilsdóttir, architect at Landsbankinn and Valgeir Valgeirsson, engineer at Landsbankinn.
