Landsbankinn awards ISK 5 million in environment grants
Landsbankinn has awarded environment grants from its Community Fund in the amount of ISK 5 million. A total of 17 grants were awarded, 3 in the amount of ISK 500,000 each and 14 in the amount of ISK 250,000 each. Over 130 applications were received.
Environment grants are indented to support projects in the fields of environmental protection and nature conservation. Grants to environmental projects are in line with the bank's policy on social responsibility and its obligations in that regard.
The panel on awarding environment grants was comprised of Dr. Brynhildur Davíðsdóttir, associate professor and director of the Programme for Environment and Natural Resources Studies at the University of Iceland, Dr. Thorvarður Árnason, environmental scientist and naturalist and director of the Research Centre of the University of Iceland in Hornafjörður, Finnur Sveinsson, CSR expert with Landsbankinn and Dr. Guðrún Pétursdóttir, director of the Sæmundur Fróði Institute on Sustainable Development at the University of Iceland; she also chaired the panel.
Dr. Guðrún Pétursdóttir had this to say about the grants: "We are pleased that Landsbankinn is actively concerned with environmental issues as they are directly linked to the daily operations of all companies. It is my hope that the environment grants will boost development of a sustainable society in Iceland".
Steinthór Pálsson, CEO of Landsbankinn: "Landsbankinn aims to operate in harmony with its environment and the grants are the bank's way of awarding good ideas and supporting those who wish to exert themselves on behalf of nature and the environment. The bank has initiated several projects internally, including offering employees the opportunity to sign a Transportation Agreement that encourages the use of eco-friendly modes of transportation. This has met with considerable success. We have made concerted efforts to reduce paper use and have offset carbon emissions caused by employee car use since 2010. Work to launch more similar projects is under way."
Four types of grants are awarded from Landsbankinn's Community Fund each year: scholarships, social grants, innovation grants and environmental grants.
Landsbankinn extends its congratulations to the grant recipients and wishes them every success with their projects.
